A king has eleven sons and one daughter named Eliza.The king marries an evil stepmother who is a wicked witch. The wicked stepmother turns the eleven princes into wild swans. The stepmother sends young Eliza away to live with peasants. At sunset, the swans turn back into human princes for a short time.

Scene: Princess Elsa (or Eliza) sits in a cart on her way to be judged, desperately weaving a shirt out of stinging nettles to break the spell on her brothers.
