Hughes originally filmed "Hell's Angels" as a silent movie. However, right as it was being completed, sound technology took over Hollywood. Hughes made the radical and incredibly expensive decision to scrap the silent footage and reshoot most of the film with synchronized sound and dialogue, turning it into one of the earliest talkie blockbusters.
