Pittsburgh Pirates baseball legend Roberto Clemente died at age 38 on December 31, 1972, when his overloaded chartered DC-7 cargo plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff from San Juan, Puerto Rico.He was attempting to personally deliver emergency relief supplies to victims of a massive earthquake in Nicaragua.The Humanitarian MissionA devastating earthquake struck Managua, Nicaragua, on December 23, 1972.Clemente learned that corrupt military officials under dictator Anastasio Somoza were seizing and hoarding the aid shipments meant for the public.He chartered a flight to accompany the supplies, believing his status as a beloved Latin American icon would force authorities to let the aid reach the people.
