Before Queen Elizabeth II, British coins featured the portrait of her father, King George VI (and earlier monarchs). On Bank of England banknotes, the reigning monarch was generally not depicted at all. Instead, banknotes primarily featured the mythological figure of Britannia, who has appeared on the country's paper money since 1694.
