The bear is the centuries-old emblem of Berlin, featured on the city’s official coat of arms and flag. Dating back to at least 1280, the black bear appears on a silver shield with a red crown. Historically, it was likely chosen as a canting arm (a visual pun) based on the popular belief that the city's name derives from the German word for bear, Bär.
